Therapeutic Acupuncture for Your Pet

Hancock Animal Hospital & Rehabilitation Center offers medical acupuncture treatment for pets in Southwest Florida.

At Hancock Animal Hospital & Rehabilitation Center, we are passionate about taking excellent care of all our pet patients. We employ a holistic approach to your pet’s veterinary care, with a focus on comprehensive therapeutic and rehabilitation services to treat chronic medical conditions and pain problems.

Acupuncture therapy is an integrative treatment method that addresses a wide range of medical issues including:

  • Digestive ailments—inflammation and motility problems such as nausea, constipation, and diarrhea.
  • Respiratory issues—sinusitis, recurrent infections.
  • Neurologic problems—nerve damage, disk disease, or spinal cord injury.
  • Musculoskeletal complaints—knee pain, osteoarthritis, or tendonitis.

How Pet Acupuncture Works

Similar to the procedure for humans, pet acupuncture involves the insertion of fine, sterile needles (needling) into specific points on the body. The main therapeutic effects of needling begin with the activation of nerve fibers at the acupuncture point (the periphery).

These stimuli then bring about changes that help balance nerve signaling and neurotransmitter activity in the brain and spinal cord, and autonomic nervous system centers that govern processes like digestion, mood, glandular activity, and immune status. Acupuncture also relieves muscle tension and releases endorphins, which help reduce inflammation and pain and encourage your pet’s body to heal itself naturally.

What to Expect

Hancock Animal Hospital & Rehabilitation Center provides acupuncture treatment for your pet in a relaxing and comfortable hospital. The acupuncture session starts off with a complete physical exam and a comprehensive review of your pet’s overall health. Dr. Finley takes the time to get to know all about your furry friend, and usually initiates treatment with a soothing massage and/or laser therapy to help your pet relax.

The acupuncture session takes about 10-15 minutes, depending on how your pet reacts to the treatment. Positive results can be seen after the first few treatments and most pets benefit from weekly sessions as needed. There are no side effects, and medical acupuncture can work as a supplement to or in combination with Western preventive care techniques.
